It's a jam packed weekend of activities around Hamilton, from world music festivals to a video dance party celebrating one year until the 2015 Pan Am Games. Here are just a few ideas for things to do this weekend.
Drink unique beer
The Because Beer craft beer festival is Friday and Saturday. More than 20 craft beer companies will offer samples. There'll also be a home brew competition, music and food trucks. Participating local brewers include The Ship, Garden Brewers and the Hamilton Brewery. There will also be brewers from as far as Montreal and Owen Sound.
The event starts at 4 p.m. on Friday and runs from 12 noon to 8 p.m. on Saturday. It's at Pier 4 Park and tickets are $25, or $40 for a weekend pass.
Head to a street party — without the car
It's the 8th edition of Open Streets Hamilton on James Street North. The weekend is aimed at promoting walking, cycling and other ways to avoid the car.
Arts and crafts will line the street. There will be music and a giant board game at the Lister Block, a demo of Hamilton's new bike share program on Mulberry Street and more music at the Artword ArtBar.
Open Streets is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday on James Street North. The event is free.
Experience world music
The Hamilton World Music Festival runs from July 11 to 13 in Gage Park. Its lineup includes the Hamilton-based Latin Vintage Orchestra and the local reggae band Riddim Riders. Out-of-town musicians include Gurpreet Chana, Jabulani and the Sultans of String.
The festival is free. On Friday, it runs from 6 to 11 p.m. On Saturday and Sunday, it runs from 12 noon to 11 p.m.
A party to count down to Pan Am
On Saturday, the five-kilometre waterfront trail will be illuminated with neon Pan Am colours to count down the one-year mark to the 2015 Pan Am Games. There will also be celebration sites along the trail ending with a video dance party at the end.
There's an optional $40 registration fee, but everyone can participate. The participation kit includes LED glasses, a glow-in-the-dark bracelet and a shirt and cinch bag. Attendees can register here.
The event starts at 8 p.m. The dance party starts at 10 p.m.
Watch the World Cup final on a big screen
Also part of the Pan Am effort, organizers will show the World Cup final on a jumbo screen at Pier 8.
The event starts at noon with a celebration of the cultures of Pan Am and the World Cup finals. Live CBC coverage starts on the jumbo screen at 2:45 p.m.
Admission is free for anyone wearing soccer apparel. Attendees are also encouraged to wear colours and bring flags. Organizers will present a Pan Am Gold Cup to spectators wearing colours for the winning team.
