The same system that brought powerful tornadoes to Nebraska Monday is moving into Southern Ontario Tuesday, and Environment Canada warns that a tornado is possible in the Hamilton area, too.
The agency issued a severe thunderstorm warning Tuesday morning.
"Conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, damaging hail and heavy rain," Environment Canada said in a statement. "There is also a risk of a tornado."
The threat of severe thunderstorms is continued until Tuesday night. Hamilton police are reminding drivers to watch their speed and keep a safe distance between other cars.
Environment Canada warns that very large hail can damage property, break windows, dent vehicles and cause serious injuries. Strong wind gusts can toss around objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles.
"Remember, severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes," Environment Canada said. "Be prepared for severe weather. Take cover immediately, if threatening weather approaches. In Canada, lightning kills up to 10 people every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors."
Horizon Utilities reports there is power outage in the area bound by Strathearne Avenue to Parkdale Avenue to Dunsmure Road to Barton Street East in the east end affecting 567 customers. Power should be back on by 3 p.m., the report says.
