The theft of a cancer charity donation box from a Hamilton hotel has led to the arrest of a 52-year-old Mississauga man.

Hamilton police had made a plea on Tuesday asking the public to help them identify a man who allegedly stole a donation box containing $11,000 from a weekend cancer charity bike ride.

The theft took place at Ride to Conquer Cancer's banquet dinner at the Sheraton Hotel on King Street on Saturday. Supporters of the event paid an admission fee, as well as donated to the fundraiser.

The suspect was captured on camera leaving the hotel while carrying the cash box, police say.

On Wednesday morning, Hamilton police announced they had made an arrest in the case. On Tuesday at about 2:30 p.m., police found the suspect in a room at a downtown Hamilton hotel and arrested him without incident.

Police also took a female companion of the suspect into custody. Investigators recovered a portion of the stolen funds, police said.

Brian Ross Peebles, 52, of Mississauga, faces theft and possession of stolen property charges in relation to the incident.

Police say the accused's bail has been opposed.
