Victoria Day 2014: What's open and closed in Hamilton

Though it's been cool and summer is still a month away, the first long weekend of the sunny season is upon us.

With the holiday revelry comes safety reminders from local police and fire officials.

The Hamilton Police Service is conducting its annual Victoria Day weekend traffic blitz, watching for impaired, aggressive and distracted drivers as well as seatbelt violations. Officers will be on the lookout for cycling infractions, too.

Many services, both public and private, will have the day off on Monday. Here's a list of what's open and closed in Hamilton on Victoria Day: 

City-run libraries, museums and recreation centres

All of Hamilton's public library branches and civic museums are closed on Monday. 

Some public pools will be open. To check swim times, go to the city's Victoria Day recreation schedule page.

Transit

The HSR will be operating on a Sunday/holiday schedule on Monday, while GO trains and buses will be running on a Saturday schedule.

DARTS will be operating holiday service hours. All subscription trips, with the exception of those for people on dialysis, are cancelled for those days. Individuals who need to book trips for Monday must do so in advance by calling 905-529-1717.

Waste collection

Household waste collection will not take place on Monday. Pickup during the week will occur the morning after your regular scheduled collection day. 

Banks, stores and other amenities

Banks and most grocery stores are closed on Monday. And all LCBO and The Beer Store locations have the day off. Stores at Jackson Square, Lime Ridge and Eastgate Square malls will be closed, too.
