A host of events are on tap for the first weekend of May, including several that will shed serious light on local history.
Here's a list of things to do in Hamilton this weekend.
Stars on Ice
Less than three months after winning medals at the Sochi Olympics, Canadian figure skaters Patrick Chan, Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir are set to triple axel into FirstOntario Centre (101 York Blvd.) on Saturday for the Hamilton date of the Investors Group Stars on Ice 2014 tour. The show will also feature performances from past Olympic medallists such as Joannie Rochette and Kurt Browning.
Saturday's spectacle starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets range in price from $19.50 to $88.25 each and are available at Ticketmaster.ca.

Commemoration of the Genocide against the Tutsis of Rwanda
This spring, Rwandans around the world are commemorating the 20th anniversary of the genocide in their home country that claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands of members of the Tutsi minority and killed or displaced thousands more. Rwandans in the Hamilton area are holding their own remembrance ceremony on Saturday at McMaster Innovation Park (175 Longwood Rd S).
Speakers will include Laval University professor Egide Karuranga, who survived the 100 days of slaughter by hiding out with other Tutsis in the Hotel de Mille Collines, an experience that was dramatized in the 2004 film Hotel Rwanda. Memorial University professor Philipe Basabose and Western University's Henri Boyi are also scheduled to speak.
The commemoration is slated to start at 2 p.m. inside McMaster Innovation Park's Suite 105.

Doors Open Hamilton
Many of Hamilton's oldest buildings, places of worship and other establishments of interest will open for free tours on Saturday and Sunday for the 12th annual edition of Doors Open Hamilton. A few of the more than 35 sites that are participating include the Art Gallery of Hamilton, the Ferguson Pumping Station and the Hindu Samaj Temple of Hamilton and Region.

Jane's Walks
Another way to learn more about the people, places and history of Hamilton is to go on a Jane's Walk. Named after the late public intellectual Jane Jacobs and hosted every year in more than 100 cities worldwide, the walks are led by volunteer guides who are well-versed in the neighbourhoods they're showing off. A total of 14 scenic strolls are set for Hamilton this weekend, including "Secrets of the Rail Trail," "A walk in Gage Park" and "Story time walk in Crown Point." All of the tours are free.
For more information, including times and meeting locations, go to the Hamilton page on the Jane's Walk website.
James Street musical
Artword Artbar (15 Colbourne St.) is inviting Hamiltonians to gallop through history with its musical production James Street.
Life on James Street will be imagined on-stage during a magical encounter between a modern Hamiltonian and the city's official Town Crier from 1850, who will bear witness to the colourful history of Hamilton.
James Street runs from April 30 to May 11 on Tuesdays and Saturdays at 8 p.m, Sundays at 3 p.m.
On Saturday, there will also be a special performance of James Street, featuring a presentation by Margaret Houghton at 8 p.m. Houghton, archivist with the Hamilton Public Library's local history and archives department, has written extensively about the city's history.
Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. You can book online here or call 905-543-8512.
