A pregnant woman was stabbed in central Hamilton Wednesday afternoon, police say.

Officers were called to the area of King Street East and Sanford Avenue for reports of a stabbing around 5 p.m. The victim was a 20-year-old woman who had made her way from an apartment on Main Street East to a nearby variety store looking for help.

Once officers got there, the woman told them a man she knew had stabbed her, police say. Const. Debbie McGreal-Dinning would not comment on their relationship.

The pregnant woman was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Officers located the suspect at an apartment on Main Street East. They needed to break into the building – and once they did, they found the suspect clutching a butcher knife in the building's stairwell, police say.

Officers talked the man into surrendering, and he dropped the knife. He was arrested and taken into custody.

A 25-year-old Hamilton man was charged with aggravated assault and held for a bail hearing.

This video of the scene where the woman was taken to hospital was posted on YouTube by user Amber Hayes Wednesday evening:
