A man suffered stabs wounds to his arm after two would-be thieves accosted him on the street, Hamilton police say.

After 4 a.m. Sunday, a 24-year-old man was walking on Main Street E. near Graham Avenue N. when two men approached him, said Staff Sgt. Scott Balinson.

"They confronted him and demanded the contents of his pockets," he said.

When the victim refused, he was stabbed in the arm.

The assailants then fled and the man, who was "bleeding significantly," cried out for help, said Balinson.

"A citizen driving past heard his calls for assistance and administered First Aid."

The driver, a man in his 40s, took the victim into his car and began driving to the hospital.

At some point, the driver may have spotted and flagged down an officer, Balinson said, but he wasn't certain.

He described the victim's injuries as "non-life-threatening."

The stabbing came on a busy night for police in Hamilton's east division. A stabbing at an east end apartment building sent four victims to hospital.

Police were involved in a foot chase and a subsequent confrontation that sent a male suspect to hospital.

As a result, the province's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been called in to probe the case.

The SIU is called in any time police are involved in an incident in which someone is severely injured, dies or alleges sexual assault in an incident involving police.
