The Guinness won't be the only thing that's ice cold this St. Patrick's Day.
On a cold St. Patrick's Day in 1981 the city set a temperature record at -14.7 C. That record was broken early Monday morning. A temperature of -15 C was recorded at Hamilton's Munro International Airport.
How's that for a way to start the week that gives us the first day of Spring?
Environment Canada expects an early-morning low of –17 C for Monday. With the wind chill, temperatures could feel as cold as –25 C.
Hamilton is under a cold weather alert that was issued Saturday and came into effect early Sunday morning.
The city's chief medical officer of health issues the alert any time that current or expected temperatures drop below –15 C or –20 C.
Good news, however, a warming trend is in store for Hamilton starting early in the week.
A high of –4 C and a mix of sun and cloud are expected for Monday following the crisp early morning.
Sun and cloud and a high of 2 C are in the forecast for Tuesday, while periods of rain and a high of 4 C are in store for Thursday, the first day of spring.
Environment Canada meteorologist Wei Zhang said she isn't certain whether Hamilton has seen its last blast of unseasonable cold.
"I'm wouldn't be surprised if there was another cold event before the end of the month," she told CBC Hamilton on Saturday.
