Food truck culture has just gotten a little more widespread in Hamilton now that they're allowed to sell in the city's public parks.

For a daily fee of $50, food trucks can set up shop at six local parks, including Bayfront, Pier 4 and Sam Lawrence. The move is part of a summer-long pilot project.

Local food trucks have been pushing for the ability to sell at parks. There are no down sides to this change, said Coun. Chad Collins of Ward 5.

"I think it's actually going to help," he said. "It may help introduce people to some of our regional parks who haven't been in the past."

Food trucks have been a source of celebration and debate in Hamilton. Thirty-five of them will gather for the annual Sew Hungry food truck festival on May 2.

In 2012, restaurant owners complained that they took business away from brick-and-mortar establishments, and city council passed a bylaw saying they had to be 30 metres away from stationery eateries.

Food trucks will be located in the following parks:

  • Bayfront Park
  • Pier 4 Park
  • Heritage Green Community Sports Park
  • Turner Park
  • Sam Lawrence Park
  • Centennial Park
