The Ontario Fire Marshal has been called in to probe the cause of a Tuesday classroom fire at an east Hamilton elementary school.

Just after 9:30 a.m., firefighters responded to an alarm at the Elizabeth Bagshaw Elementary School, located on Albright Road just west of the Red Hill Valley Parkway.

Hamilton Fire Department spokesman Claudio Mostacci said the fire started on the second floor of the building but has since been extinguished. No one was in the classroom at the time of the fire.

There were no injuries in the fire, said Ian Wright, a commander with the Hamilton Paramedic Service.

The fire was isolated to the classroom, but the extent of the smoke damage is not clear, Mostacci said.

Officials don't have an estimate on the dollar value of the damage, he said on Tuesday afternoon.

The Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB) said students were evacuated to the neighbouring Red Hill Learning Centre.

At around 10:50 a.m., board spokeswoman Jackie Penman said school officials are getting in contact with parents to make arrangements to send the students home.

"Parents can pick up students from Red Hill," she said. "The school will also be contacting parents directly to discuss the plans for their child."

As of 3 p.m. on Tuesday, the board had not announced whether the school will open on Wednesday.
