A wind chill warning as well as an extreme cold alert are in effect for Hamilton Tuesday.

It's -19 C as of 6 a.m. with the wind chill making it feel like -30 C. Bundle up.

Environment Canada expects a high of -16 C with mainly cloudy skies clearing late this afternoon. The wind chill is expected to make it feel like -32 C.

A cold alert is issued when current or anticipated weather conditions are at or below -15 C or -20 C with the wind chill.

Hoping for warmer weather on Wednesday or Thursday?

"It's going to be cold for the rest of the week, there's no doubt about that," said CBC weather specialist Jay Scotland. "It's not going to warm up until Friday.

And when it does warm up enjoy the 'warmth' while it lasts. Scotland says the weekend warm-up won't last long. Expect "a cold start to the work week."

Scotland says to expect "a bitterly cold one" tonight as well with temperatures dropping to -20 C overnight.

Forecasters don't expect temperatures in Hamilton will fall as far as they did on Jan. 7, which saw a low of –24 C. Wind gusts of up to 60 km/h made it feel as cold as –41 C in parts of the city that day.

Tuesday's readings also aren't expected to break any records; the lowest recorded temperature for Jan. 21 at the Hamilton airport's weather station, according to Environment Canada, is –24.7 C, reached on that day in 1984.

The city's medical officer of health issued a cold weather alert late Sunday morning.

Stay warm Hamilton.
