Right now, it feels like -38 C with the wind chill. That's the most important piece of information you need to know before heading out the door this morning. Make sure to wear your warmest mitts, boots and coat today. And layer! Stay warm, Hamilton.
The city is still under a cold weather alert, in effect until cancelled. The city implements a cold weather alert when the temperature is -15 C or below. Today certainly qualifies. Make sure to keep an eye on kids, seniors and any one who might need help in this cold.
Because of the low temperature, garbage collection is CANCELLED today. More information to come on when collection will resume.
The Hamilton school boards are urging parents to make sure children are dressed warmly today, especially those who wait for a bus or walk to school.
Here are some tips on getting through a really cold day.
GO Transit trains and buses heading eastbound to Toronto from Hamilton are on schedule as of 8:30 a.m.
Updates at 8:30 a.m.:
QEW Fort Erie-bound on the upside of the Skyway Bridge: OPP reports a multi-car collision blocking the left lane. An ambulance is on its way.
MTO cameras slow the 403 between Walkers Line and Third Line moving slowly.
403 westbound just past Dundas just before the 407: there is a collision in the left shoulder.
403 eastbound before Hurontario: a two-car crash is in the right shoulder.
Updates at 8:00 a.m.:
Most highways still are still moving well, but the Toronto-bound lanes over the Skyway Bridge are a bit slow. Be careful driving over that bridge – its probably quite windy.
There is a three-car collision in Flamborough at RR 97. OPP is reporting no injuries.
In town, traffic is starting to get a bit heavier. King Street East from Wentworth to Dundurn is moving slowly. Both James and John streets heading down into the lower city from the access routes are also moving slow this hour.
But a warming: the roads are not in perfect shape. There is still snow and ice on local roads and highways, so drive carefully.
CAA recommends regularly checking tire pressure, which can easily drop in these temperatures, and keeping your gas tank at least half-full to avoid freezing.
I'll say it again: -38 C with the wind chill, -24 C without. At 7:30 a.m., the cold weather record has already been broken. The previous record was -20 C in 1968.
The high today is -19 C, but factor in the wind chill, and Environment Canada predicts it'll feel like -41 C.
There's a 30 per cent chance of flurries tonight. A low of -23 C. With the wind chill, -34 C.
We won't see much relief on Wednesday. Again with the wind chill, the high is projected to be -33 C.
Update at 9:30 a.m.
The Canadian Martyrs Catholic Elementary School, at Main St. W. and Cootes Dr., has flooded after a heating pipe burst this morning. Parents are being asked to pick up their children.
The school says phone service at the school is currently unavailable and recommends checking the HWCDSB website for further updates.
The province will distribute gift cards over the next three days in Hamilton to low-income families who lost food during the ice storm.
The city has received 450 gift cards for Hamilton residents on social assistance, or who fall below the low-income cut off, Mayor Bob Bratina said. To be eligible, people must have been without power for at least 48 hours. People on Ontario Works and the Ontario Disability Support Program are eligible. People who fall under the low-income cut off line are also eligible.
And it's cold in Hamilton. Did I mention that??
For the day's world headlines, give CBC's AM Express a listen:
