A freezing rain warning is in effect for Hamilton and much of southern Ontario overnight Sunday. Environment Canada points out that freezing rain makes for "icy and slippery" roads and walkways. With significant precipitation set to roll in across the region Sunday evening and into Monday morning, the roads may be treacherous in time for the morning commute.
Along with the rain, last week's record-breaking temperatures are likely to make a return by Monday morning, as Environment Canada predicts "cold, brisk winds will also likely produce widespread dangerous wind chills beginning Monday night as some of the coldest air in years blasts across the region."
Temperatures on Monday and Tuesday are forecast at highs of -15 C and -18 C, respectively.
The freezing rain warning is in effect for much of the southern and eastern regions of the province. A significant frontal boundary from Sarnia to near Hamilton and eastwards across Lake Ontario is expected to remain fairly stationary for another day.
Some areas north of the front are expected to get up to 20 millimetres of freezing rain, while others could get snow, ice pellets or rain.
Forecasters say travellers should be prepared for dangerous winter conditions and possible power outages.
Last week, the winter weather raged in Hamilton with temperatures on Friday breaking the all-time cold record for that date while more than 30 cars were involved in various collisions across the QEW east of Hamilton Thursday night.
