It's as much a part of the holidays as carolling, eggnog and embarrassment at an office holiday party: what would Christmas be without Christmas movies?
So in the spirit of the season, CBC Hamilton has compiled two lists — some of the most beloved and acclaimed holiday films of all time in the photo gallery above, and some of the more off-kilter Christmas movies in the gallery below.
Sadly, we couldn't include them all. Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer didn't make the cut — neither did The Santa Clause or Jack Frost. We somehow doubt anyone will mourn the absence of Vince Vaughn's Fred Claus, though.
You've seen some of the best up top, so without further ado, here are some of the least likely Christmas films ever:
Best of the rest of Christmas movies
We also couldn't resist sharing some of our own choices. Here are our staff picks for favourite holiday films:
- Samantha Craggs: A Christmas Story. Not only is it funny, but it's comedy you can relate to. Who hasn't thought about sticking their tongue to a pole when they were a kid? Who hasn't had problems running in a snowsuit? Relatable comedy is tough to do and the movie nails it.
- Conrad Collaco: A Charlie Brown Christmas. When mankind faces judgment day and hears 'What Good Have You Done?' ... answers will be few, throats will be cleared and then someone will click play on a dusty VHS version of the Charlie Brown Christmas Special. Oh, and there's a great dance scene in the middle.
- Cory Ruf: Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Stop motion animation. Silver and Gold. Enough said.
- Julia Chapman: A Muppet Christmas Carol. Because I'm 28 and The Muppets are still awesome.
- Adam Carter: It's a toss-up between Batman Returns and Die Hard. Batman because it was the last good film before Joel Schumacher ruined the franchise and Danny DeVito was born to play the penguin. Die Hard because Die Hard rules.
- Rick Hughes: Polar Express. The animation is amazing, it's fun, it's a bit scary, it has personality and wonderful characters. It's magical in the way that really only works with Christmas specials and it can be enjoyed by all ages. And it makes you want to believe.
- Kevin Gamble: A Christmas Story. It's become tradition to watch this with my family over the holidays. And every year, my father laughs like it's the first time he's ever seen it.
Now it's time for you to choose. What's the best holiday film of all time? Let us know in the poll below:
