A 21-year-old Hamilton man is in custody after he threatened to shoot and kill a police officer in a standoff on the East Mountain, authorities say.
Around 6:20 p.m. on Friday, a "distraught male" broke into his father's gun locker inside a home in the area of Upper Sherman Avenue and Parkplaza Drive, police said in a statement on Saturday.
When police arrived on scene, the man exited the house and allegedly pointed a gun at the officers, threatening to kill one of them.
The officers ducked for cover before the suspect fired three shots from a .22 calibre rifle, police say.
However, police say they don't believe the shots were fired in the direction of the officers or towards any of the houses in the area.
Police say the suspect then began to obey officers' commands, surrendering himself only minutes into the standoff.
Nobody was injured and no property was damaged in the confrontation, police say.
Officers seized all of the guns from the parents' house.
The man faces several charges — including pointing a firearm, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and uttering death threats — in the incident.
He was held for a Saturday morning bail hearing.
