Hamilton DayStarter: Everything you need to know Friday

It was no surprise. But it was a moment the world didn't want to come. Nelson Mandela, the South-African icon who led the fight against apartheid in his country, died at age 95 Thursday evening.

People in Pretoria, South Africa's capital, danced in the streets until the early hours of the morning to show love for the man that did so much for their country. It was a scene he would have loved, said CBC's senior correspondent Adrienne Arsenault during live coverage Thursday – young people, old people, children, black and white, in the streets together.

The world is a different place this morning – we don't have his shoulder to fall on. U.S. President Barack Obama said in his address Thursday night but he left us to believe the world truly can be a better place. One South African held a sign in the streets last night reading: 'It is up to us now."

CBC will keep you up to date on what in planned here in Hamilton, in Canada and across the world to remember Mandela's life. The South African government is planning a state funeral for Mandela. He will be buried in his hometown Qunu.

How will you remember him today? Leave your thoughts in CBC's book of condolences.

It's Sounds of the Seasons at CBC today, an all-day open house in support of local food banks. Three-hundred and seventy-five thousand Ontarians rely on a food bank every month. Stop by 118 James Street North between 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and if you're able, bring a food or monetary donation for Hamilton Food Share. We have prizes, a silent auction and live music at lunch hour. Local folk duo Dawn and Marra plus bluesman Harrison Kennedy will perform at noon. Hope to see you there!

No major issues on the roads this morning – pretty smooth for a Friday.

In town, King Street East is a bit backed up at Gage and again between John and Queen.

West 5th and Upper James are backed up both ways from Mohawk until the access routes to the lower city.

Here's a map of ongoing construction around the city that might slow you down this morning.

It's -1 C for your walk to work this morning. Not too chilly, but still feels more seasonal that it did yesterday.

A high of zero degrees Friday and cloudy.

Here's your weekend weather: a high of -3 C and sunny both Saturday and Sunday, so plan to spend some time outside!

Hamilton heard the news of Mandela's passing around 5 p.m. yesterday. It's "a time to cry," said Hazel, a Hamiltonian who was at a Jackson Square beauty store. CBC Hamilton will collect more reaction to the news today.

A funeral today for murdered McMaster University student Tyler Johnson. The service is planned for 11 a.m. at Marlatt Funeral Home at 615 Main St. E. at Sanford Avenue.

In honour of Mandela, NASA posted this photo of South Africa from high up above.

Former CBC radio host Barbara Frum travelled to South African to speak to Mandela in one of his first interviews after being released from prison. Take a look.

Again, it's CBC Sounds of the Season! Come join us at 118 James Street North between 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.!
