Hamilton Daystarter: Everything you need to know Wednesday

Thoughts and prayers are going out to the Hamilton Police Service this morning. A veteran officer – an incredibly well-respected man – has died. Staff Sgt. Ian Matthews succumbed to injuries last night around 10 p.m. after shooting himself in the early afternoon.

I made a mistake this morning. I wore a parka, and it's really not that cold out. Don't make the same mistake. Wear a wool coat instead.

The temperature is on the rise, folks, and you can feel it this morning. It's -6 C for your walk to work, and its going to warm up. We're going to be in the pluses tomorrow. And snow is going to melt. A bit of a change from the past few days.

A shout-out to The Rolling Stones. Keith Richards is 70 today. Amazing. Rock on, Keith, rock on.

On the highways, the 403 Toronto-bound is now slow starting at the York Blvd. on-ramp.

In town, Upper James is slow both ways from the Linc until just before the access.

King Street East is slow from Wentworth until just past Queen Street, as is Main Street West from McMaster University heading downtown until John Street.

A note for anyone planning on taking the Sherman Access this morning: one lane will be closed between the Sherman Cut and the Kenilworth Access for street light repair between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Traffic will flow both ways, and police will be around to direct.

Here's a map of ongoing construction projects that you might run into this morning.

It's -6 C out this morning, but feels a bit colder with the windchill. We're expecting a high of -4 C today with a chance of flurries.

But the temperature is going to warm up overnight – we'll hit 1 C around midnight. That means there is also a risk of freezing drizzle to replace those flurries.

Thursday will be a lot warmer than what we've been used to in the past few days. A high of 2 C and the potential of freezing rain.

A sad and tragic day for the Hamilton Police Service. Staff Sgt. Ian Matthews, a 25-year veteran of the force, has died. Matthews shot himself inside Central Station yesterday afternoon. He passed away in hospital around 10 p.m. last night.

Matthews served in many roles with the service, including extended times in the BEAR (break and enter, auto theft and robbery branch) and Homicide Units, and most recently as Central D Squad staff sergeant.

"This is devastating and I recognize the profound impact this has on our organization," said Hamilton Police Chief Glenn De Caire. "We are supporting Ian's family during this tragic time and our Critical Incident Response Team continues to respond to support our members through this tragedy."

For world headlines, give CBC's AM Express a listen.

This is just too cute. And too funny. And also a little unfortunate for the cat involved. Meet Waffles – the cat who thought he could.
