Hamilton DayStarter: Everything you need to know Wednesday

This just in: TIME Magazine announced Pope Francis as Person of the Year, for bringing people back into the Catholic church and together in spirit. Runner-up: whistle blower Edward Snowden.

Who is your person of the year, Hamilton? Tweet us @CBCHamilton. Or you can tweet at Pope Francis himself and tell him what you think. He's on Twitter, too – @Pontifex.

On to someone who has been Person of the Year before. Nelson Mandela will lie in state in Pretoria starting today until Friday. His funeral will take place Sunday in his hometown Qunu. Watch CBC News and listen to CBC radio for coverage all week and on Sunday.

No issues to report on GO Transit or HSR this morning.

On the highways, QEW Toronto-bound over the Skyway Bridge is a bit backed up, but nothing serious.

In town, Bay Street is moving slowly from Main to Barton. Other than that, the roads are moving well at 8 a.m.

Here's a map of ongoing construction projects around the city that might slow you down this morning.

Another cold day in Hamilton. Its -8 C for your walk to work this morning, but it feels more like -16 C with the wind chill. So bundle up the kids. They'll need it.

A high of - 6 C later on today and a chance of flurries in the afternoon and evening. A low of -13 C overnight.

Thursday is going to be colder, so make sure you're prepared for that. The high expected tomorrow is just -9 C. Parka time.

Hamilton Police have offered to pay for Hamilton's new conductive energy weapons program, or Tasers, themselves. That means it won't cost taxpayers anything for the first year, said police chief Glenn De Caire at a special police board meeting last night.

The program would see 519 Hamilton Police Service officers trained on CEWs, and would expand the arsenal from 66 to 150 weapons. Original estimates pinned implementation costs at about $1 million. Read reporter Samantha Craggs full story on the new program.

The "lovely" woman who lived in the Wilson street house that went up in flames and collapsed Monday is still missing, police said. Neighbours identified her as Lynn Kingsbury, a woman in her 60s, who was nice, friendly and loved her two dogs and two cats.

The Ontario Fire Marshal will continue their clean-up of the property over the next few days until it is safe to investigate inside the home.

City council is meeting tonight. For the latest news, follow reporter Samantha Craggs on Twitter, @SamCraggsCBC.

For your world news, give CBC's AM Express a listen.

Hamilton's favourite nature photog is back. Rob Porter (@rgeraldporter) often tweets beautiful images of the Dundas Valley. Here's a new one. So lovely that this is in #HamOnt!

This is four minutes and 38 seconds of pure fun. Meet Meatball, a carousel-loving corgi. This might be the best thing you see all day.

Who doesn't love the Sound of Music around holiday time? Theatre Aquarius' musical starts tonight, so you can see the Von Trapp family and Maria live on stage, singing about their favourite things. The Sound of Music runs until Jan. 4.
