Toronto Mayor Rob Ford admitted to smoking crack cocaine on Tuesday, saying it happened "in one of my drunken stupors" a year ago.

The mayor made the shocking statement at Toronto city hall during a scrum with reporters.

When asked by a reporter if he has smoked crack cocaine, Ford replied, "Yes, I have smoked crack cocaine.... Am I an addict? No. Have I tried it? Probably in one of my drunken stupors probably approximately a year ago."

Last week, Toronto police chief Bill Blair confirmed that police have recovered a tape with images that are consistent with previous media reports that suggested the mayor appeared to be smoking crack cocaine and making racist and homophobic slurs. The video was recovered during an investigation of Ford's friend and occasional driver, Alexander Lisi, also known as Sandro or Alessandro. Lisi has since been charged with extortion.

Ford has stated repeatedly that he can't comment on a video he has not seen.

Hamiltonians weighed in on the surprising announcement for the Mayor of Toronto.
