One man is dead after an overnight shooting in Hamilton's east end.

At 1:23 a.m. on Saturday, police responded to a call about shots being fired in the area of Kenilworth Avenue North and Britannia Avenue.

Staff Sgt. David Hennick of the Hamilton Police Service said a "middle-aged" Hamilton man was wounded and died of his injuries.

At 8:30 a.m. this morning, the homicide unit was on scene conducting a probe into the shooting death.

Kenilworth Avenue North from Barton to Cannon was closed on Saturday morning for the investigation.
