Each year, the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board asks the Ministry of Education for money to do its most-needed capital projects. Last year, it received about $40 million, $31.8 million of which was for a new north-end high school in the Pan Am precinct.

The board submits the list by the end of October. The province typically responds within about three months.

Here's this year's list in order of priority.

1. A new south high school

The board is asking the province for $31.8 million to build a new high school at the corner of Rymal Road East and Miles Road. If the province grants the request, the $31.8 million will be the board's share of a school that will also include space for 500 French students in Grades 7 to 12 from the public French school board.

2. A Dundas high school

The board voted last year to close Parkside Secondary in Dundas and move its students to a renovated Highland Secondary. The board is asking for $16 million in deferred capital maintenance costs to do the renovations, much of which will be "legacy costs" such as boilers and structural repairs. The board lists Highland as being in poor condition in its long-term facilities master plan.

3. Dalewood renovations

The board wants about $7 million to renovate the west-end elementary school, which it lists as being in poor condition.

4. New Ancaster Meadowlands East school

The board wants to build a new elementary school in this steadily growing area. It purchased a 2.5-hectare (6.25-acre) site in June. The current Ancaster Meadow school has nine portables.

5. An addition to Mount Albion

The board wants to build six classrooms onto the school to replace a four-room port-a-pak.

6. Maintenance to Sherwood Secondary

Sherwood barely escaped the axe last year when in a last-minute surprise vote, the board voted to close Barton Secondary instead, along with Hill Park and Mountain schools. Now Sherwood needs about $31 million in deferred capital maintenance costs. The board lists the school as being in poor condition.

7. Maintenance to Ancaster High

The high school needs about $14 million in deferred capital maintenance. The board lists it as being in poor condition.

8. Maintenance to Westmount High

The board needs about $21 million to do deferred capital maintenance at Westmount, which it lists as being in poor condition.
