City councillors will debate Wednesday whether to spend nearly $1 million to expand Hamilton Police Service's Taser program.
Members of the general issues committee will discuss a request from Chief Glenn De Caire on whether to spend $992,462 to broaden the use of conductive energy weapons (CEWs), often referred to by the brand name Taser.
The money would pay to train 579 front-line officers, in addition to the 219 trained now. It would also pay two permanent full-time officers to train and retrain officers in CEW usage.
Councillors could accept, reject or refer the report to 2014 budget deliberations. Or even more likely, councillors could opt to write to the province and ask Ontario to fund it, Coun. Lloyd Ferguson said.
The service is pressed for time, De Caire told Hamilton's police services board Tuesday. If the issue isn't decided by Dec. 1, police will miss the training cycle and have to wait until the following year.
But Ferguson said it's unlikely a decision will happen that soon.
"I think the reality of having this approved by Dec. 1 is near zero."
Police would also like councillors to get input from residents on whether they'd like to see the Taser program expanded, De Caire said.
Also on Wednesday's agenda:
- Developing a cultural plan for the city.
- Whether the city should host the Juno Awards in March 2015, including contributing a maximum of $250,000.
The general issues committee meeting starts at 9:30 a.m. at city hall council chambers. CBC Hamilton reporter Samantha Craggs will tweet live from the meeting. Follow her at @SamCraggsCBC.
