Supercrawl 2013 is fast approaching — and there is so much happening downtown that you're going to have to budget your time on Sept. 13 and 14.
Because three stages are running concurrently, some performances overlap a little — so you may have to make some tough choices about who to see. Here's a look at 10 artists to watch when Supercrawl takes over James Street.
Passion Pit
Supercrawl headliner Passion Pit's brand of electro-pop is sure to be a big draw this year, but the band is currently scrambling to repair a bunch of gear that was "completely annihilated" is a Chicago storm.
High winds blew tarps and covers off their equipment last weekend, and heavy rain destroyed 75 per cent of the band's gear.
"As a touring band that is proud to actually perform electro-pop as opposed to just pressing play, using many keyboards, both analog and digital, this is a nightmare we've had for quite some time," the band said in a statement. "It's almost incredible that it hasn't happened already. Well, it happened, and now we're doing our best to recover."
Passion Pit was on Letterman Wednesday night and everything seemed to be in working order. Let's hope their Supercrawl performance is under clear skies. They're playing the Hamilton International Airport Stage on Saturday at 10:45 p.m.
Wintersleep
Wintersleep was a welcome addition to the festival's Friday night lineup. The Juno-winning band was formed in 2001 and has released five albums, the latest being 2012's Hello Hum. In 2008, the group won the Juno Award for new group of the year on the back of the single Weighty Ghost and their 2007 album Welcome To the Night Sky.
Wintersleep is playing on Friday night at 10:55 p.m. on the Hamilton Community Foundation/Exclaim! Stage
Diamond Rings
John O'Regan's synth-drenched pop-rock is proving to be a hit three albums in. His pseudo-androgynous Diamond Rings persona riffs on Bowie at least a little bit, but the music is a somewhat more straightforward.
O'Regan's star is growing - but he's still in that magical in-between phase where he can play for millions on the Late Show and the Tonight Show one week and play in a small Hamilton club like This Ain't Hollywood the next. Diamond Rings is playing the Hamilton Community Foundation/Exclaim! Stage on Saturday at 6:05 p.m.
The Dirty Nil
If you're into punk rock, grunge or Nirvana, check out The Dirty Nil. This local punk rock band plays sleazy, fast rock and roll. Always promises to be a party. The band is on the Y108/Dr. Disc Stage on Saturday at 8 p.m.
The Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra with Hachey the MouthPEACE
Hachey the MouthPEACE's ultra-layered beat boxing loops are cool enough on their own, but adding in the Hamilton Philharmonic with it will no doubt make this a performance to watch at Supercrawl.
The HPO Brass and Hachey are set to collaborate in a "set of genre-bending, cross pollination of brass repertoire and human percussion that challenges audience perceptions of classical music," organizers say.
The HPO Brass and Hachey the MouthPEACE are on the Y108/Dr. Disc stage on Sat., Sept. 14 at 4:00 p.m.
LeE HARVeY OsMOND
Tom Wilson has gone all out with his acid folk band for Supercrawl, bringing along Amy Helm, Matt Andersen, Paul Reddick, Oh Susanna, Colin Linden (Blackie and the Rodeo Kings/Bob Dylan) and Michael Timmins (Cowboy Junkies) for the performance.
The set will no doubt be a memorable one. LeE HARVeY OsMOND plays the Green for Life Waterfront Stage at 9:50 p.m. Saturday.
Young Rival
Hamilton's Young Rival gained worldwide notoriety last year when the video for Two Reasons from Stay Young became a hit on YouTube.
The song was a collaboration with Michigan face-painting artist James Kuhn, and was one of 10 finalists for the Prism Prize back in February. Come see it live at Supercrawl. Young Rival is playing the Green For Life Waterfront Zone at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
Cowlick
The song is a slinky, riff-based effort, much like something Cake would have done. Their sound is a hodgepodge of influences, drawing from equal parts alt-rock, folk, noise-rock - and according to their Myspace page - eggnog and Mexican food.
Vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Dylan Hudecki says finishing Night Vision was a lot like giving birth.
"And we just had to let that baby free and get it into everyone's ear holes," Hudecki said. Cowlick is playing the Y108/Dr. Disc Stage Friday night at 10 p.m.
F--ked Up
Toronto's F--ked Up has received widespread critical acclaim on their three studio albums and host of 12-inch records - most recently, the rock opera David Comes to Life.
The band has gotten a nod for the Polaris Prize twice - winning it in 2009. Even if you're not into melodic hardcore, they deserve a look. Fucked Up is playing the Hamilton Community Foundation/Exclaim! Stage on Saturday at 10:20 p.m.
Haolin Munk
Hamilton's Haolin Munk play free-flowing, expressive jazz-fusion. Worth checking out for anyone interested in a take on Jazz that isn't traditional. They play the Hamilton International Airport Stage at 12:15 p.m. on Saturday.
Supercrawl is free and runs on Sept. 13 and 14 in downtown Hamilton.
