The man who died in an accident at Taylor Steel in Stoney Creek on Friday was electrocuted, says the provincial Ministry of Labour.

The man was performing maintenance work on a crane when he suffered a "work-related electrocution," said Matt Blajer, spokesperson for the ministry.

"We have an investigation happening over there," he said.

Around 1 p.m. Friday, fire officials responded to a call about an "industrial accident" at the steel manufacturing facility, located on Arvin Avenue near Dewitt Road on Stoney Creek, said Claudio Mostacci, a spokesperson for the Hamilton Fire Department.

Crews attempted a high-angle rescue to retrieve the man, who was on a crane approximately 30 to 35 feet off the ground. Mostacci said he didn't know the exact nature of the accident, nor the chain of events that led up to it.

Blajer could not comment on the nature of the accident because of the ongoing investigation, he said. "The investigation could take up to a year."

Paramedics tried to resuscitate the victim, but the effort was called off "after consultation with an emergency physician," said Carmen D'Angelo, a manager with the Hamilton Paramedic Service.
