The Stooges, a Hamilton-based basketball team of former collegiate players age 50-plus, took gold at the World Masters Games in Turin, Italy on Friday afternoon.

The seven-man squad beat a team from Australia 68-28 to win their division. Overall, the team went 7-0 in its World Masters Games run.

"We've all been playing basketball all of our lives and it's the first time for any of us to win this," said Frank Lostracco, a real estate agent from Ancaster and the Stooges' point guard, speaking on the phone from his hotel in Turin. "It was an unbelievable feeling."

A highlight of the tournament for Lostracco was team captain Brian Fuller's performance in the gold medal game.

"In the championship game, Brian Fuller was on fire. I think he had like 35 points, so he kind of just killed the other team. That was a highlight."

Concluding on Sunday, the Turin tournament is the eighth edition of the summertime World Masters Games, a multisport competition for athletes age 35 and up.

"The people here are great," Lostracco said of the festive atmosphere surrounding the games. "The community is very much behind it all supporting it, I think much more so than it would have been in Canada.

"So it's been a great cultural experience for all of us."
