The Neighbour 2 Neighbour Centre has issued a desperate plea for donations of baby food since its shelves are nearly barren.

"We've been out of baby formula before, but we've never been out of baby food to this degree," said Sara Collyer, director of community food at the centre. On Tuesday, there were only 14 jars of baby food at the centre. On Wednesday morning, that number had grown to 50 - but that's still not near enough, she says.

"We've limited how much people can take at one time," she said.

Neighbour 2 Neighbour typically goes through 20 cases of baby food a week, and there are 50 jars in each case. The centre serves 1,200 families a month, and single-parent families are their largest demographic, Collyer says.

"We feed a lot of families."

Collyer says she's not entirely sure what has caused the lull in donations - but a summertime dip and a rising baby food prices could be the likely culprit, she says.

You can donate baby food and formula (or any food - they're always low on protein, fruits and vegetables) by visiting the Neighbour 2 Neighbour website, calling the centre at 905-574-1334 or donating in person at 28 Athens St. from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday.

"I'd be very happy with any amount," Collyer said.

"We can store as much as we can receive."
