Monday is Canada Day, meaning barbecues will be humming and the night sky will shimmer with bursts of colour and light.

A downside of the occasion, perhaps, is that many services, both public and private, will be closed for the day.

With that in mind, here's a quick roundup of what's open and what's not this holiday Monday:

Unsurprisingly, most movie theatres and many restaurants will be open. Check your local listings. Call ahead. You know the drill.

For those of you looking to take a dip, city-run outdoor pools, as well as Wild Water Works, will be open. Public indoor pools, on the other hand, will be closed.

All LCBO and The Beer Store locations will be closed on Monday. Lime Ridge Mall, as well as most grocery stores and pharmacies, will be closed, too. Jackson Square will open, but most shops inside it will not.

Municipal offices are closed for the holiday. All city-run museums, Hamilton Public Library locations and municipal recreation centres (with the exception of outdoor pools) also have the day off.

There will be no garbage, blue box or green bin collection on Monday. This week, pickup will occur on the day after your regularly scheduled collection.

Canada Post locations will be closed and there will be no mail delivery or pickup. And McMaster University and Mohawk College will be, you guessed it, closed.

Transportation

HSR and DARTS services will be operating on Sunday/holiday schedules on Monday.

For those planning to go farther afield, GO trains will be running on a Sunday schedule, while GO buses will operate on Saturday schedule. (GO figure.)

Fireworks

The city is holding its annual Canada Day waterfront fireworks display on Monday night. Though the show won't start until dusk (approximately 10 p.m.), the party at Waterfront and Pier 4 parks will have already begun.

More than 10 food trucks will be serving up eats between 6 p.m. until 11 p.m. And a host of local entertainers, including face painters, balloon artists and the acrobats with the Hamilton Aerial Group, will be performing around the two parks.

The city says the annual do attracts around 30,000 visitors, so it's asking attendees to bike, cycle, walk or take public transit to get to the event, as on-site parking will be limited.

Starting at 6 p.m., buses will provide free (return) shuttle service to Pier 4 leaving from a spot on the east side of John Street, just north of King. The stops, the city says, will be well marked.

(Oh, and one more thing — don't drink and drive.)
