How's that for a greeting?

That was Liam Ramshaw, 14, a member of Hamilton Harbourtown Sound, riffing with a few of his friends at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto on Friday night.

They're in the Toronto for the 2013 Barbershop Harmony Society International Convention, which started on June 30 and wrapped up on Sunday. Around 6,000 delegates from around the world gathered at the conference, which included competitions, demonstrations and a whole lot of ad hoc harmonizing.

"It's really cool because at this convention," said Ramshaw, "you can pretty much be anywhere and meet up with three other guys and sing a tag. It's so much fun."

A highlight for Ramshaw was getting to sing at the CN Tower — on top of the glass floor, no less — with Vocal Spectrum, an internationally renowned barbershop quartet from Missouri.

He won the opportunity through his involvement with the Ontario Youth A Cappella (OYA) Chorus. He beat out all of the other members in a competition to see who could sell the highest number of $5 fundraising pins. (He sold 78.)

"It was amazing," Ramshaw said of meeting Vocal Spectrum. "They're a really, really good quartet. It was great to sing with people who do it so well."

Ramshaw, who starts high school in the fall, got into barbershop at the urging of a musical friend.

"My friend Ben and I sang in the church choir together. He came up to me and said, 'Why don't you come out with me and sing in OYA?' "

Ramshaw did. He also joined Hamilton Harbourtown Sound, a chorus of which his grandfather John Wilkie is a member.

The teen said he plans to start his own barbershop quartet, with the intention of entering into competitions.

"It's a lot of fun and really satisfying," he said of the pastime. "When you're with the right guys and you hit the right notes, it's an incredible feeling."
