Two people are dead and three are in hospital following a crash between a car and an SUV just after midnight in Glanbrook, south of Hamilton.
CP24 says both drivers — a 42-year-old Glanbrook man and a 17-year-old male from Stoney Creek — were killed in what appears to be a head-on collision.
A 10-year-old child and two 15-year-olds were in a vehicle driven by the Glanbrook man and are in hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The 17-year-old was driving a Mazda northbound on Highway 56, while the 42-year-old was driving southbound on a GMC Terrain SUV.
The teen driver was pronounced dead at the scene, while the 42-year-old was taken to hospital and died there of his injuries. Two daughters of the older man and one of their friends were taken to hospital. They are expected to survive.
Police earlier said the collision was in the early stages of investigation and no further information would be released until next of kin are notified.
Highway 56 between Golf Club Road and Guyatt Road was closed as police conducted their investigation but it was re-opened to traffic shortly after 7 a.m. ET.
