Thousands of Hamiltonians were still without electricity in their homes on Sunday morning, roughly 36 hours after a wild summer storm toppled trees and downed power lines across southern Ontario.
As of 8 a.m., about 2,200 customers in Hamilton were still without power, down from 20,000 early on Saturday morning, said Neil Freeman, a spokesperson for Horizon Utilities.
"We made significant progress over last night," said Freeman, "but it's not an easy process."
The company estimates regular service will be restored to all parts of the city by 11 p.m. on Sunday.
The highest concentration of homes and businesses without power lies just east of downtown, in an area where many large branches and even entire trees fell on power wires during Friday's storm.
