Police say Montreal Canadiens player Nathan Beaulieu and his father Jacques, coach of the Sarnia Sting, have both been charged with two counts of assault following a fight at a house party in Strathroy, Ont.

Police said the altercation occurred Saturday night after the Beaulieus had attended a charity golf tournament in the southwestern Ontario municipality. Two men were injured.

"Their injuries are described as minor," Strathroy Caradoc Police Service Deputy Chief Mark Campbell said. "Consistent with bruising, scratching, from being punched."

Jacques Beaulieu, 45, was named this week as a finalist for the Ontario Hockey League coach of the year after leading the Sarnia Sting to a 35-28-5 record. He is scheduled to make his first court appearance on June 11 in London, Ont.

Nathan Beaulieu, 20, who played the majority of the hockey season with the Hamilton Bulldogs of the American Hockey League, is currently in Montreal for the start of the NHL playoffs.

"We have been made aware of the situation," said Donald Beauchamp, senior vice-president of communications and community relations for the Montreal Canadiens. Beauchamp would not comment any further, saying "it is a legal issue."

Bulldogs spokesperson Derek Wills told CBC News the team can't comment on the situation as it's a legal matter.

Nathan Beaulieu was selected 17th overall by the Canadiens in the 2011 NHL draft.

The defenceman had seven goals and 24 assists with the AHL's Hamilton Bulldogs this season. He also appeared in six games with the Canadiens, registering two assists.

He was called up to the NHL for the Canadiens' playoff run, which starts at home against Ottawa on Thursday.

Jacques Beaulieu previously served as a head coach with the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League's Saint John Sea Dogs — coaching his son Nathan for one season — and he previously served as an assistant with the OHL's London Knights.
