Hamilton Police Chief Glen Decaire is backing down in the budget stalemate with city council.
Decaire is recommending that the police services board accept a 3.52 per cent budget increase for 2013, down from the 3.71 the service had been asking for. If, as expected, the board accepts the chief's recommendation, the vote will avoid sending the budget to a provincial arbitration panel.
Council refused to accept the 3.71 per cent increase requested by the chief and passed the 3.52 per cent increase earlier this month.
The force originally asked for a 5.25 per cent increase.
To achieve the decrease the chief trimmed budgets in several departments.
The agenda for the today's board meeting contains and outline of the changes and also contains a report on the ACTION team — which has been a point of controversy in the budget proceedings. Some say the team pulls officers away from other duties needlessly, while others say it provides a vital service.
CBC Hamilton has decided to try something new with the meeting's agenda. In the box below, we've opened the document up for your comments.
