Power restored for rural Hamilton-area homes

Power has been restored for residents living in the area of Lynden Road and Highway 99, according to Horizon Utilities.

Freezing rain and high winds knocked over trees and hydro wires after a storm moved through southern Ontario Thursday night, causing power outages across the region.

"We had a number of outages this morning," Horizon Utilities spokesperson Tony Iavarone said on Friday. .

As of 11 a.m. on Saturday, about 70 customers in the area of Lynden Road and Highway 99 were still without power. Horizon says service was restored just after noon.

The Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board closed several schools on Friday because of power outages: Ancaster High, Ancaster Senior, Balaclava, Beverly Central, Dr. J. Seaton, Dundana, Fessenden, Mount Hope, and Queen's Rangers.

Hamilton experienced showers for much of Friday, but the temperature stayed above the freezing mark after about 7 a.m.

More rain is in the forecast for Hamilton on Saturday, Environment Canada says. Relief from the wet and cold may come on Sunday — a mix of sun and cloud and a high of 9 degrees are expected.
