Hamilton city councillors could pass a budget today resulting in a $65 tax increase on the average $266,000 household.
The current draft budget calls for an increase of 1.9 per cent over last year. Councillors are debating the budget in city hall council chambers.
The general issues committee took a hard line Wednesday, turning down a Hamilton Police Service budget that required a 3.7-per-cent increase over 2012. The committee insisted instead on a 3.52-per-cent increase, which would mean a police budget of $140,414,620.
The matter will go back to the police service board, and could end up in provincial arbitration.
