If it seems a little darker than usual in Steeltown this evening, don't panic. Hamilton and Horizon Utilities are teaming up to take part in Earth Hour, a campaign to raise awareness about energy conservation and global warming.

From 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., all non-essential lights in corporate buildings and around the city will be doused, including decorative downtown tree lighting. But don't worry, streetlights will still be on to make sure everyone can travel safely.

Horison Utilities will also be participating by implementing energy-saving measures in their facilities and switching off all non-essential equipment and lighting.

"Earth Hour is about so much more than simply turning off your lights for one hour," Mayor Bob Bratina said in a release.

"It's about raising global awareness about the small steps we can all take each and every day to reduce our ecological footprint and make a big difference. We hope organizations and individuals in Hamilton will take action – not just during Earth Hour, but every day."

The campaign originated in 2008 in Sydney, Australia. By switching off all electricity in homes, businesses and cities for one hour, the campaign aims to get people to stop and think about their daily energy use. Millions of homeowners take part in the event every year around the world.
