Hamilton police were called to investigate a suspicious package in one of the engineering buildings at McMaster University Wednesday morning.

Campus security called police after finding the package, Hamilton Police media relations officer Debbie McGreal-Dinning told CBC News.

The package was found in a stairway in the John Hodgins Engineering building. The coffee shop area in the building and one classroom were temporarily evacuated, but were reopened at 11:15 a.m.

Police said they found a "small electrical device." It was removed without incident.

The police have determined the device was not an explosive and there was no threat to public safety.

"Whether it was something left behind by an engineering student that fell out of their bag, that's unknown. It was some sort of found property, but it's not an explosive," McGreal-Dinning said.

No classes were cancelled. The John Hodgins Engineering buildingis open and all activities will continue as scheduled today, according to McMaster.
