Supporters were quick to exalt the new amenities surrounding the Pier 8 skating rink as Winterfest kicked off on a frigid Saturday in Hamilton.
"We heard from our north end friends that we really needed a wind barrier down here," said Coun. Jason Farr, gesturing to the newly erected barrier that cuts the wind coming off the lake next to the rink.
The kickoff was also used as a ribbon cutting ceremony for the official opening of Williams Café's waterfront expansion. Mayor Bob Bratina, Coun. Tom Jackson and Coun. Chad Collins were also on hand to officially open the facility.
"This is a wonderful expansion we're celebrating," Farr said. "I've been in here already on a cold Friday night before the wind barrier and watched my boy from under a heat vent — which is very good."
