A Tuesday morning Hamilton hotel heist lead to a five-hour standoff in Kitchener that ended in six suspects taken into police custody.
Tuesday around 1:30 a.m., a 25-year-old man went to the hotel to meet up with a female friend. When he got to her hotel room, a woman let him in, but he was attacked by two armed men — one had a gun, the other a knife. They stole his wallet, cellphone and then fled the area in the man's car. He was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The suspects then drove the stolen car to the Kitchener-Waterloo area, according to police. Just before 10 a.m., Waterloo Regional police arrived at a home on Weber St. E. in Kitchener. Multiple officers, including a tactical unit, arrived on the scene and closed off the two-block area including placing a nearby public school under hold-and-secure procedure.
By noon, the first of six suspects left the house, followed by the other four around 3 p.m. All six were taken into custody and a firearm was recovered inside the home. The stolen car was also recovered. Police believe the incident was targeted and continue to investigate.
