Custodian and maintenance staff at Hamilton public schools have ratified their two-year collective agreement with the province.

On Sunday, members of the Local 4153 of the Canadian Union of Public Employers voted in favour of the deal, which was reached on Dec. 30.

The decision occurred in the shadow of ongoing labour strife between the Ontario government and the unions representing the province's public elementary and secondary teachers.

The teachers have been protesting the controversial Bill 115, which allows the province to impose contracts and clamp down on teachers' strikes. Education minister Laurel Broten has utilized the legislation to bring in two-year collective agreements with public educators, but has said she plans for the legislation to be revoked.

"Our members understood what our bargaining committee faced at the provincial bargaining table in the shadow of Bill 115," says Arch Walker, president of CUPE Local 4153.

"Their support helped greatly throughout this entire process, and we thank them for that support."

CUPE represents about 55,000 workers, including educational assistants, early childhood educators, instructors, custodians, librarians and secretaries.
