Tired of looking at the rapidly drying Christmas tree in your living room? In less than a week, the city is coming to get it.
Curbside tree pickup runs from Jan. 14 to 21. The exact day depends on where you live. The week of Jan. 14 is Flamborough, Dundas and Hamilton Mountain, said Dennis Guy, Hamilton's project manager of community outreach. The following week is lower Hamilton, Stoney Creek, Ancaster and Glanbrook.
Each year, the city grinds about 200 tonnes of trees into compost, Guy said.
"From the curb, they go to the transfer station," he said. "Then they go to the outdoor compost site and are ground up by a big tub grinder. Then six to nine months later, it'll be black gold."
Hamilton has always composted its trees and has no plans to change that, Guy said. Some of the compost is used in city parks and traffic islands. It is also distributed to the public.
"We have giveaways where you can come and scoop your own bucket for a donation to Hamilton Food Share," he said.
Jim Watson of Watson Christmas Trees in Mount Hope said the death of the trees signals the end of the holidays.
"Our tree came down the other day and I felt kind of sad that the season was over," said Watson, a director on the Christmas Tree Farmers of Ontario board.
"Christmas is a time when people get together and the tree kind of represents that."
