Hamiltonians are going to get the opportunity to chime in on what they think of the Randle Reef "big steel box" cleanup plan.
The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency is inviting the public to comment on a report they've conducted on the conclusions and recommendations regarding Randle Reef's cleanup and whether or not its likely to cause "significant environmental effects."
You can read that report here. Comments can be sent by email to RandleReef.EA@ceaa-acee.gc.ca.
This is the final public comment period of the environmental assessment of the project. Once it concludes, the Minister of Environment will consider the report and public comments before issuing an environmental decision statement.
Hamilton's Randle Reef is the worst coal tar contaminated site in Canada. This proposed project will see the highest concentration of coal tar — about 130,000 cubic metres — put into what is essentially "a big steel box." The surrounding contamination — some 500,000 cubic metres — will be dredged into the containment facility. The project is said to have a 200 year lifespan.
Federal Environment Minister Peter Kent announced Ottawa's share of the $138.9-million project in December. The cleanup is a joint commitment between the federal and provincial governments, the Hamilton Port Authority, the cities of Hamilton and Burlington and the Halton Region.
