City delays decision on Dialogue Partners contract

Hamilton still plans to get feedback on its city services, but it's unknown whether it will do so with Ottawa-based consulting firm Dialogue Partners.

City manager Chris Murray will report back to council in two weeks on how the city can best get input from residents on its services. But he's keeping mum on whether the firm it hired to do so, which drew harsh criticism in Hamilton social media circles, will be involved.

"The really important thing here is we're going to complete the work," he said. "We're going to do the job extremely well. It's too important an assignment not to do extremely well."

The issue was discussed in camera at a council meeting Wednesday. Three councillors —Brad Clark, Brenda Johnson and Judi Partridge — lost a vote to have it discussed in open session.

After the closed-door discussion, council would only say that Murray will return in two weeks with more information.

Murray understands any frustration there might be in the community for answers.

"Taking a little bit of time right now to correct some of the matters of concern to people is critical," he said. "And council wants to understand the details around how we're going to move forward and achieve that outcome."

The public consultation project — called Our Voice, Our Hamilton — drew fire earlier this month. Dialogue Partners asked for clarification on the meaning of HSR (Hamilton Street Railway) through the @ourhamilton Twitter account. It also had photos of other Hamiltons on the project's Pinterest page.

Some Hamilton councillors have called for the dissolution of the contract.
