About ten members of the Hamilton Blues and Roots Society broke out their instruments for an impromptu rendition of Roy Hawkins' "The Thrill is Gone" at Jackson Square on Saturday afternoon.

The blues classic, made famous by B.B. King in the '70s, was belted out by singer Miza Smith while she was backed up by her compatriots on guitar, resonator, bongos and even a cardboard box.

"It started out very subdued, but once we got going, more and more people were coming over and tapping their toes," said Chris Labonville, the society's vice-chair.

"The newer generation in Hamilton has lost the blues a bit — but lots of music here got its start in the blues," he added.
