An elderly woman was hit by a car when trying to cross a road in Dundas Sunday morning, police say.

The incident happened around 10 a.m. on Governors Road, just outside the seniors' home between Ogilvie Street and Overfield Street.

Hamilton EMS official Ian Wright told CBC Hamilton that the 87-year-old woman was pronounced dead after being transported to Hamilton General Hospital.

Staff Sgt. Bryan Grigsby said the police accident reconstruction unit had taken over the investigation.

A stretch of Governors Road was closed for several hours, but has since reopened.

No charges have been laid. The investigation is ongoing.
