Hamilton public high school teachers reject tentative agreement

Public high school teachers turned down a deal presented by the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board Friday, meaning job action will likely resume in Hamilton's public schools on Monday.

Both the full time and occasional bargaining units did not ratify a tentative collective agreement. A news release from the union did not indicate how many teachers had voted or the margin by which it was defeated.

"We understand that our secondary school teachers did not ratify the tentative collective agreement," said John Malloy, director of education, in a statement. "We will try to minimize the job action's impact on students and families."

The president of the local bargaining unit for the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation did not respond to requests for comment.

According to the HWDSB, schools will be open on Monday and classes will continue as normal.

If that situation changes, the board says it will contact parents right away. According to a news release, the board does not expect the job action to affect school athletics — though some field trips may be cancelled.

This news comes just days after secondary teachers in the York and Niagara regions also voted against ratifying agreements that had been tabled.

Province may use "tools" to deal will strikes

Teachers across the province have been in negotiations with their respective school boards, while most of the provincial teachers unions have been in on-and-off talks with the Ontario government.

A major point of contention is the provincial Bill 115, which freezes teachers' pay, pares back benefits and expands the government's ability to crack down on strikes.

Ontario education minister Laurel Broten responded on Thursday, stating the government would "continue to negotiate until we reach agreements or we will use the tools available to us."

"We do not want students in the middle."
