Unemployment numbers in Hamilton dropped in November, according to Statistics Canada data released Friday.

Hamilton's unemployment rate fell to 6.1 per cent last month from 6.3 per cent in October, StatsCan said.

This means Hamilton comes in significantly under Ontario's overall unemployment rate of 7.9 per cent. The unemployment rate declined 0.4 percentage points province-wide in November and employment rose by 32,000.

The city has seen a steady decline in the number of employed in recent months from the 7.5 per cent rate recorded in July this year. Hamilton's economic development department has attributed the change in part to companies that expanded into vacant local industrial space in the fall, creating jobs.

The improvement in the employment numbers stands in stark contrast to a report issued in November by Hamilton's Social Planning and Research Council that revealed one in five Hamiltonians lives in poverty.

The StatsCan unemployment numbers represent the portion of the population actively looking for work, and don't reflect those who have given up looking for work.
