Hamilton high school teachers to vote on tentative deal Friday

Hamilton's public high school teachers will vote Friday on whether to accept the tentative deal its union representatives have struck with the school board.

This comes just days after secondary teachers in the York and Niagara regions voted against ratifying agreements that had been tabled.

Public high school teachers in Hamilton were to commence work-to-rule measures on Nov. 19, but the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board and the local bargaining unit reached a last-minute deal.

Friday's vote is scheduled for 4 p.m. and results are expected to be released sometime in the evening.

CBC Hamilton contacted Chantal Mancini, president of the District 21 bargaining unit of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation, on Friday morning, but she said she could not comment at the time.

Province may use "tools" to deal will strikes

Teachers across the province have been in negotiations with their respective school boards, while most of the provincial teachers unions have been in on-and-off talks with the Ontario government.

A major point of contention is the provincial Bill 115, which freezes teachers' pay, pares back benefits and expands the government's ability to crack down on strikes.

The Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario issued a statement Wednesday indicating that its members (ETFO) could begin strike action next week.

Ontario education minister Laurel Broten responded on Thursday, stating the government would "continue to negotiate until we reach agreements or we will use the tools available to us."

"We do not want students in the middle."
