A gala fundraiser last week at the John W. Foote V.C. Armouries on James Street North raised $600,000 for soldiers and military families.
More than two-thirds of the donations to Operation Yellow Ribbon came from about two-dozen companies with local ties, while about 30 per cent came from a fundraising campaign held by Pioneer gas stations.
"It sounds very trite to say, but this would not have happened without the understanding and support of the corporations and individuals who've stepped forward," said Ret. Capt. Tim Fletcher, an event organizer. "It really speaks to the cause and the understanding our sponsors have about what our families go through."
The funding, Fletcher said, is going to support two organizations: The Canada Company, which provides scholarships for the children of slain soldiers and employment support for soldiers who've returned from overseas; and the 13th Regiment Foundation, which provides counselling and financial help for military families in Hamilton and Burlington.
"Both of those are extremely important programs," Fletcher stressed.
Held on Thursday, the gala dinner sat 280 guests and featured a performance by tenor Robert Pilon, who has starred in Toronto productions of Les Miserables and The Phantom of the Opera.
This was the second Operation Yellow Ribbon event. The first, held in 2010, raised about $400,000 for the cause.
