Fifteen months into his young life, Brayden Richards is still fighting.

The Mountain baby was born with a mystery illness that has stymied doctors searching for a diagnosis. From the time he was born, he has had no ability to gag, cough or swallow. He has limited movement in his hands and feet and requires a tracheotomy and suction machine.

His parents, Steve and Katherine, were told he wouldn't reach his first birthday. Now that he has, a fundraiser planned for Nov. 17 will also double as a celebration of his life.

"He's a great little boy. He really is," said family friend Kelly Curtis, who is helping organize the event. "He's been such a fighter. I've seen his ups and I've seen his downs. It just goes to show he's here for a reason, and he's here for a long time."

Brayden's troubles started when he was born, when he was so unresponsive that he didn't react to pain. He had hypertonia (increased muscle tension) from the waist down and hypotonia (reduced muscle strength) from the waist up.

His condition has been examined by doctors at McMaster Children's Hospital, who have conducted blood tests and MRIs, and ultrasounds and X-Rays.

His family cares for him at their East 23rd Street home, where Brayden has "good days and bad days," Katherine said.

"On a bad day, there's a lot of secretions, a lot of suctioning. On a good day, his stats are really good and he's breathing fine. He's getting excited and wanting to touch things. He's being Brayden."

Money raised this weekend will go to supplies and the required machines to care for Brayden. A warm mist humidifier to help Brayden's breathing, for example, costs more than $3,000, Curtis said.

Brayden's Bash will be from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion Prentice Room, 435 Limeridge Rd. E. It will include a DJ, live acts, games and raffles.

Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. For more information, contact skrichards11@gmail.com. Donations can be made out to Brayden Richards Trust.
