An early morning blaze has left a single family dwelling on Burlington Street East heavily damaged.
Hamilton firefighters were called to a residence at 47 Burlington Street East at approximately 3:08 a.m. Monday morning.
When they arrived at the 2-1/2 storey dwelling, fire crews observed smoke and fire coming from the basement and first floor of the residence.
They immediately began search and rescue operations of the house, which they soon determined was empty. It's believed a neighbour called emergency services.
Conditions at the site were serious enough that additional crews were called to assist in containing the fire.
Dave Christopher, a spokesperson for Hamilton Emergency Services, said at least 25 firefighters were on the site at one point as well as eight trucks.
The fire, which is believed to have started in the basement spread rapidly and burned through a section of the floors separating the first and second floors.
The age of the home may have contributed to the fire's spread.
"These older style houses — if you get a fire that starts in the basement, there's no way to stop it. It travels through the whole building quickly," said Christopher.
It took four hours to extinguish the fire. The homeowner was reportedly away for the weekend but has been contacted and is aware of the fire and the damage, said Christopher.
One firefighter fell through the first floor while attempting to contain the fire. Christopher said the fire had been burning for some time at that point, which had weakened the floor. The firefighter, who was from one of the additional crews called to the scene, was not injured.
The fire marshal was on the scene Monday morning investigating the cause of the fire.
An estimate of the damage was not available Monday morning, but Christopher suggesed it may be quite high given the structural and water damage.
